Hans’s career flourished and his children grew, and as they neared adulthood he began to long for something more than the gossip and sensationalism upon which he had built his career. It just happened to be a time of upheaval for the magazine industry—National Geographic was founded in 1899, and Photoplay in 1912, introducing many readers to the stories and images from around the globe. Those stories and images were often of war and destruction. In contrast, Hans had a vision for a magazine that would stand in relief to the turmoil, a collection of stories about fathers that would provide a positive alternative to the horrors of war. “What about fathers?” he wrote to his brother in 1914. “Where shall their voices live, so that others may see the light they bring the world?”

Hans used every connection he had, and on April 10, 1916, the first issue of Fathers Discussion Monthly was printed. Fun Fact: The first copyeditor was the third cousin of Henry Luce, founder of Time! Anyway, Fathers Discussion Monthly originally ran uplifting fiction stories on and around the themes of fatherhood, and it became a haven for writers whose paternal writing instincts had been shut out of the literary world. For instance, it was there that L. Frank Baum published The Father of Oz, and where J. M. Barrie published Peter Pan’s oft-forgotten sequel, The Boy Who Finally Grew Up after a Sound Talking To.

The magazine quickly found its niche, reaching a wide array of fatherly readers in the Northeast. In 1926, it went through its first metamorphosis with the hiring of editor Joseph Hadden.

The magazine industry was at a turning point, with the nation’s dads increasingly turning to radio and moving pictures for entertainment, and Hadden saw that changes had to be made for the magazine to thrive far into the future. He was also concerned that the literary tone served only a higher class of fathers. “I want to reach the Everyman Dad,” he wrote in a memo to Froelich. “I want Dads across the country to turn to us for support, guidance, and tips on how to clean their gutters.”

It was under Hadden’s watch that the magazine expanded to non-fiction reporting. He also spearheaded a campaign for national distribution, utilizing movie theaters and radio programs to encourage Dads around the country to ask their local drugstores to stock their favorite monthly. Finally, he knew the time had come for a snappier name. Fathers Discussion Monthly became Fathers Monthly in 1926, and by 1929 its name changed to Dad Magazine.

It’s 1929, betcha know what comes next! That’s right—prosperity! Despite the rest of the world being in a bit of a
